The process of coal and solid biofuels conversion at thermal electric power stations is associated with the risk of dust-air mixtures explosion.
In most cases, during the solid biofuel conversion an explosive concentration of combustible dust is observed in the technological process.
Despite the fact that explosions at energy facilities occupy an insignificant segment in the total number of incidents (about 4%), the consequences of the explosion and the number of casualties in such cases are very high.

Taking into account the large size of the equipment used in this industry, the consequences of a dust explosion are devastating and entail a shutdown of the technological process, which is unacceptable for an energy facility.

In the coal-fired power industry, the explosion hazard is represented by coal conversion areas at thermal power plants: - the processes of coal transporting and preparing for combustion are accompanied with significant dust formation, while dust is formed in the form of a dust-air mixture in the equipment and accumulates in the form of deposits in the workshops of the power plant due to leaks; - the process of coal and coal dust storing in bunkers; - coal pulverizing process (coal pulverizers and sizers).

There is a similar risk of explosion of dust-air mixtures at thermal plants operating on solid biofuels. Fuel before combustion must be dried and reduced in size; these processes are usually accompanied by the formation of combustible dust in suspension.
