Dust explosion protection in Europe

B-FLAP check valve

Producer: RSBP

The b flap passive detonation containment device is used to prevent the propagation of flames and shock waves into adjacent areas of process equipment. The mechanical check valve is used wherever there is combustible dust – in filtration separators, cyclones, dryers, mills, aspiration plants, etc.
B-FLAP is designed in accordance with the European Parliament and Council Directive 2014/34/EC, based on EN 16447, EN 15089 and EN ISO 80079-36. The explosion-proof valve belongs to equipment group II; for zones 20 and 2 – inside B-FLAP I; 21 and 1 – outside it.
*The unit is not used where there is an explosive gas or hybrid environment.

Description

In normal operation the non-return damper blade is open by the energy of the flowing air, or locked by the RPD mechanism. The second option is safer as it ensures that the device is always open and does not depressurise the pipework.

In the event of an explosion, due to the air shock wave, the valve closes and locks in the closed position. This is how the mechanical check valve prevents an explosion from spreading through the pipelines.

Advantages

  1. Suitable for pipes from DN 100 to DN 800.
  2. Mechanical principle of operation. Does not depend on power supply.
  3. Does not require complex maintenance. It is sufficient to keep the valve free from dirt.
  4. Can be operated in ambient temperatures from -40°C to 80°C (-20°C to 60°C for versions with electrical components).
  5. Operation is independent of the concentration of combustible dust in the pipeline, provided that maintenance intervals are observed.
Technical features

Explosion-proof valve b flap is made of structural steel. Stainless steel on request. Coating is Komaxit (RAL 3000 – red). Can be painted in any other colour on request.

The B-FLAP non-return valve can be optionally equipped:

  1. Terminal box for connection of electrical components.
  2. Intrinsically safe relay. Required if sensors are connected.
  3. Optional counter flange to be welded to the pipework.
  4. Special flange seals in customer-specified material.
  5. Damper position sensor. This provides a signal to close the valve for use in plant automation.
  6. Fouling sensor. Reports the accumulation of a significant layer of product in the valve body for timely maintenance.

Installation

The following rules must be observed when selecting and installing the explosion-proof valve:

  • The combustible dust explosion class must comply with B-FLAP;
  • Observe the minimum and maximum installation distances, tilt angle and installation space as specified in the operating instructions;
  • Valve size must correspond to the pipe diameter or adapters with an angle of inclination α ≤ 16° must be used;
  • Explosion-proof valve may only be exposed to an explosion wave propagation in one direction.

If the B-FLAP cannot be installed horizontally, it can be installed with a certain inclination α ≤ 90°. Note that the intended direction of detonation must always be horizontal or downward.

Important. The B-FLAP must be mounted and operated so that no electrostatic charge can arise on its outer jacket. For example, it is not recommended to clean the explosion-proof valve with a dry cloth.

The scope of delivery includes:

  • Assembly and operating instructions;
  • Work log;
  • Delivery notification;
  • EC Declaration of Conformity 2014/34/EU.
Maintenance

The operator must assign a person to be responsible for the safe operation and correct condition of the explosion-proof valve. This must be a qualified person who has undergone appropriate training and has no health-related contraindications.

The maintenance intervals should be determined by the operator on the basis of the manufacturer’s instructions and the operating conditions. Recommended intervals:

  • 1st maintenance interval — 1 week after commissioning;
  • 2nd maintenance interval — one month after commissioning;
  • 3rd service interval — after 3 months after commissioning;

The shortest maintenance interval is once a year. The valve is inspected for clogging by material carried in the pipeline, as this may impair the function of the unit. If necessary, mechanical cleaning is carried out.

A maintenance schedule is to be drawn up to ensure that the explosion-proof valve is always in perfect condition.

All maintenance work must be recorded in a work log. It is included in the scope of supply.
